What CAGR tells you
The compound annual growth rate is the smoothed annual rate at which an investment would have grown if it compounded at a steady pace. It is the fairest single number for comparing investments held over different periods, because it strips out the noise of year-to-year volatility.
CAGR = (Ending value / Beginning value)1/years − 1. A high total return over many years can still be a mediocre CAGR — always annualise before comparing.
